The decision to seek hair loss treatments does not always mean undergoing surgery. There are several non-surgical hair loss treatments (including the medications Rogaine and Propecia) that can stabilize hair loss. However, there are also several medical hair loss treatments that are questionable or completely ineffective.

Take the time to educate yourself on the proven hair loss treatments before you make a decision.

Proven Medical Hair Loss Treatments

Rogaine (which contains the active ingredient Minoxidil) is an over-the-counter topical hair loss treatment that is applied to your scalp twice a day. Studies show that Rogaine stabilizes hair loss in over 70% of men (at 48 weeks of use). Rogaine also stabilizes hair loss in 80% of women (at 48 weeks of use).

Propecia (with the active ingredient Finastride) is a prescription pill that is taken once a day. Propecia directly blocks the production of DHT (which causes hair loss). A five-year study shows stabilization of hair loss in 90% of men. Propecia is currently the gold standard for medical hair loss treatments. Propecia is, however, for men only. While pregnant women should not take the pill (or even touch broken tablets), there is no risk to a fetus if the father is taking Propecia.

Nizoral is a shampoo-based hair loss treatment. Several small studies have indicated Nizoral's effectiveness in the treatment of hair loss. This is especially true when used in combination with Propecia or Rogaine.

Tricomin is also a shampoo-based hair loss treatment. It has shown worth for wound healing and hair growth. Unlike Propecia, Rogaine and Tricomin can both be purchased without a prescription.

Minimally Tested Medical Hair Loss Treatments

There are dozens of other hair loss treatments on the market today. Some (such as Saw Palmetto, Folligen, and Emu Oil) are promising, but have no controlled studies to provide sound proof of their effectiveness.

There are also products such as Kevis, FNS, and Avacor that offer little actual help for those who are serious about overcoming their hair loss.

Several variables impact the success of your hair loss treatment. Before spending your time or money on any hair loss treatment be sure to contact a qualified physician.
